John Conroy, 40, was killed in one of the Nelson & Rising slate quarries
in South Poultney. He was at work in the bottom of the pit, when a
large boulder fell from the bank of the quarry, striking him in the
stomach and right hip. His leg was cut off close to the body and his
head injured. He died in a few moments. He leaves a wife and three small
