Description: One Was Smart and the Other "Smarted."

Date: January 16 1861

Newspaper published in: Columbus, GA

A gentleman of Montgomery came to the conclusion the other day that a little thrashing would do one of his negro men good, and so wrote a note to the police office requesting that thirty-nine lashes be administered to the bearer, and gave the note to the victim for delivery, saying nothing of its purpose. But somehow or other the boy did not like the errand, and on his way meeting a colored friend he requested him to leave the note at the guardhouse as he was in a hurry to go in another direction. The too amiable unfortunate duly delivered the note, pregnant with painful fate, and was duly triced up and treated to "what it called for," much to his consternation and misery. (Mobile Adv.)
