STATE NEWS
Montgomery Advertiser.]
--------
Oliver Weiss, of York, Penn., was here to-day prospecting with a view to starting a chain works.
--------
A shocking accident happened at the railroad culvert, about a mile north of this city this morning. The section hands and the bridge gang were co-operating with each other in digging away the dirt to build a new superstructure, when the brick and dirt gave way above and fell. Mr. Jenkins, a man about forty years old, and a member of the bridge gang, was caught between the huge mass of dirt and brick and covered up. The other hands labored manfully to save him from suffocation, but all to no avail. After digging through about seven feet of brick, dirt and mud, they found him dead. He was brought to this city, put on the first train and sent to his home in Graysville, Ga.
