MT. CLARE SHOPS CLOSED.
Said to Mean a Change in the B. and O. Repair System.

The Mount Clare repair shops of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad have been temporarily closed down, and this is understood to precede a general reorganization and concentration of the road’s repair system.
This work of reorganization, which is along the line of the road’s general policy of retrenchment, will probably be the first important matter to come under the consideration of Mr. Robert B. CAMPBELL, the new general manager, who will succeed General Manager ODELL on November 1. Mr. CAMPBELL will also be occupied for some time in improving the condition of the rolling stock, which, like that of nearly every other line in the country, has been more or less damaged by the extensive world’s fair travel.
The probable reorganization of the general repair system of the road will result in greater changes at this end of the line than anywhere else. The scheme, it is understood, contemplates the consolidation of Bayview, Locust Point, Riverside and Baileys repair shops into one, to be located, probably, at Baileys. In this way numerous items of expense attendant upon the running of a number of shops will be eliminated, and a reduction made in the force.
Three sets of superintendents, storekeepers and clerks are among the men who would thus be dropped, as well as a number of minor employes. The repair shops all along the line of the road, it is understood, will also be concentrated at two or three points, and a large saving effected in that way. These shops will probably not attempt the same class of work as has been done at Mount Clare for many years. The future of the latter shops is undetermined, but it is thought that the most of the work similar to that formerly done there will be given out under contract in the future.
There are now 400 freight cars being repaired at the South Baltimore car works, which also have a contract for 1,200 new cars. There are a number of dead engines and useless freight cars now in the Mount Clare yards, and a number of other practically disabled cars on the sidings along the line and at other repair shops. When the consolidated repair shops are located a great deal of this work will be begun, while other portions of the work will probably be placed with outside shops.
