Description: Negro is Lynched in Appling, GA. While Sheriff Slept the Mob Did It's Work Very Quietly.

Date: May 7 1913

Newspaper published in: Columbus, GA

Appling, Ga, May 6.

A mob entered the prison early this morning while Sheriff CRAWFORD of Columbia county, slept and quietly took John Henry MOORE, a negro, from his cell and hanged him to a nearby tree. MOORE and two other negroes were arrested Saturday night for terrorizing the community of Martinez by firing their pistols. The sheriff says he saw no indication of mob violence Monday night and did not know of the lynching until seven hours had elapsed.
