GREEK RESTAURANTS HELP G.A.R. FUND
Thirty-Four Out of Thirty-Five Lunch Rooms Subscribe. Movie Committee Named.
Returns filed with Col. Robert N. HARPER, chairman of the finance committee, caused him to observe today that the Greek restaurants of the city are setting the pace in the promptness of contributing to the G. A. R. encampment fund. Mr. HARPER announced today that thirty-four out of thirty-five Greek restaurants have subscribed, whereas a number of restaurants operated by Americans are yet to come into the fold.
“You might say that 99 per cent of our Greek restauranters have contributed,” said Mr. HARPER. “I am sorry to report that so far the proportion of returns from restaurants operated by our own citizens is not so high. I trust the lesson in Greek will be productive of early results.”
Colonel HARPER regards the responses from Greek sources as one of the best incidents of the campaign to collect a $25,000 fund to make the G. A. R. encampment in September a success. He said today that responses are being received to the letters recently sent out by him to various Washington business men and corporations and it is hoped that the complete list of contributors may be announced early next week.
The appointment of additional citizens to membership on the general committee in charge of the celebration arrangements was announced today by Secretary Thomas GRANT, of the joint citizens’ committee. The new members include:
John Doyle CARMODY, Fred MERSCHEIMER, George NORRIS, Major PATTERSON, James L. PARSONS, C. LINZ, Leroy BREITBARTH, S. Fred HAHN, George C. SCHAEFFER, William MARCHE, George H. COOK, Z. D. BLACKISTONE, Harry CRANDALL, Sidney B. LUSH, and Herbert OSBORN.
With a view to providing facilities for reunions and campfire celebrations during encampment week, a committee consisting of William F. GUDE, Col. John McELROY, and Thomas GRANT visited this afternoon the old census office building at the foot of the Capitol grounds. The immense floor space of this now vacant building would permit of a series of reunion celebrations among groups of veterans, and the committee probably will recommend that it be rented for encampment week.
