Description: William SEELEY's Divorce Suit. ZOELER
Date: December 25 1890Newspaper published in: Chicago, IL
Galena, Ill., Dec. 24.
Testimony was begun here today in a suit instituted recently by William SEELEY, an old and wealthy citizen of Dubuque, to annul his marriage with Sophia ZOELER, a notorious young woman of this city, who is alleged to have represented herself to be a pious, Christian, and model woman, and to whom he was clandestinely wedded last summer at Fairplay, Wis., by "Bob" ALLINSON, the famous Gretna Green justice of this section. At the time of their alleged elopement Miss ZOELER was sailing under the alias of Emily ADAMS, and with the view of settling in a snug harbor, is said to have adroitly worked herself into the good graces of SEELEY and entrapped him into a marriage, despite the strenuous efforts of his children by a former marriage to defeat her plans. Leading lawyers of Dubuque and Galena are engaged on the case, and rich developments are expected during the examination of witnesses.
