Affray at Stiles – Mr. Shields Not Killed as Was at First Reported
San Angelo, Tex., Dec 15. Full particulars of the affairs at Stiles, Reagan County, have just been obtained. The report of the killing of Jerome W. Shields, a prominent stockman and former Sheriff of this county, was a mistake. It now develops that Mr. Shields was beaten over the head with either the butt of a six-shooter or an ax handle, and while badly hurt, is not thought to be seriously so. There was considerable excitement her when the report came by telephone from Tankersley's ranch that Mr. Shields was killed. A number of parties left at once on the 80-mile drive to Stiles and L. L. Shields of Coleman came up on a night freight.
A man named Dee McGee, a freighter formerly in the employ of Shields, is under arrest at Stiles.
