Description: Fatal Duel. PIERCY, SHOWALTER.Date: May 31 1861
Newspaper published in: San Francisco, CA
A duel was fought on Saturday last, in Marin county, by the "Honorables" (?) C. W. PIERCY and D. SHOWALTER, members of the last assembly. The weapons were rifles, distance forty yards. The first fire was without effect. At the second fire Mr. PIERCY fell dead, having been shot in the mouth, the ball entering his head. His body was brought to this city and interred in Lone Mountain Cemetery. SHOWALTER has disappeared. The cause of the duel was words spoken in the Assembly the last week of the Session, though the parties had been at variance since the election of Senator, Mr. PIERCY refusing to support a caucus nomination for Senator who was not sound on the Union.
