The Hotel Poultney , a commodious brick structure at Poultney, erected seven
years ago at a cost of $12,000, was destroyed by fire last week Tuesday evening.
The fire broke out in the basement, and the building was almost immediately filled
with a blinding smoke, the inmates barely escaping. It is not believed the building
will be a total loss. There was an insurance of $10,000 on the building, $6,000 of
which would have expired Wednesday. The insurance on the contents was $2,000.The loss
will be greatly felt by Poultney. It is the fourth fire in the village within six weeks.
