Great excitement was created a few days ago in Kansas by the announcement that Colonel W. P. Hackney, of Windfield, in that state had come out for the Populists and left the Republican Party. Colonel Hackney has been one of the most prominent and earnest workers in that party, and his disaffection will have a decided weakening effect on the Republicans. He was chairman of the Republican state committee either two or four years ago.
Dr. T. J. Rude, of Windfield, Cowley County, was a delegate in the Republican state convention in Kansas a few weeks ago, but now comes out in a letter to the chairman of the Populist state committee of Kansas, and declares he will vote the Populist ticket from head to heel.
