Deaths: Diddep, Mason, Smith
Died, in this city on the 25th inst., after a severe illness of several days, Mr. John Diddep in the 90th year of his age. The quiet demeanor and gentleness of manner which characterized our venerable friend through life endeared him to a host of friends, in whose memory his many virtues will long remain enshrined.
Died, at his residence in Amelia County, on the 14th instant, in the 38th year of his age, John Y. Mason, Jr.
Died at Winchester, Va., on the 20th day of November of typhoid fever, Rufus G. Smith of Company 8 of the Richmond Howitzers, son of George W. Smith of this city, in the 25th year of his age. From the beginning of the war, he was in the service of his country, bearing toils and privation with fortitude and cheerfulness, and braving the perils of many battles from Bethel to Sharpsburg, unhurt – to sink at last under the slow wasting of disease. He has left a young wife and child, besides his parents, and many other relations, to grieve for their irreparable loss.
