Edgefield, SC
July 25, 1855:

Died at his residence, Gosport, Clarke Co., Ala., on July 2, 1855, Maj. James G. Butler, leaving a wife and seven small children. He was born in Edgefield District, SC, on August 18, 1796, and removed to Alabama in 1835. As an evidence of his devotion to the State and District that gave him birth, his youngest child, a boy, born some 40 hours before his death, when brought to him to see it the morning previous to his decease, says he, "It is all right--it is a boy--its name is Thomas Edgefield, in honor of my native District.
