Soldier Crosses the Rio Grande to Call on His Sweetheart
San Antonio, Oct. 12.—Because he could not resist the temptation to cross the Rio Grande river to see his sweetheart, who was dangerously ill. James P. Rogers of Battery A. Third field artillery, was placed in the guard house and will stand trial on the charge of desertion from the army. Rogers it is charged, deserted some time ago and took up his residence in C. P. Diaz. His sweetheart resided in
Eagle Pass. When she became dangerously ill, the officers suspected that Roger would cross the river to see her and watched the house. He was captured.
San Antonio, Oct. 12.—The identity of the man found on the Mitchell road with his head battered in has been established. His name is Elmore Dickey. Jesse Smith has been arrested on a charge of assault to murder. Both men live near Mitchell Lake. Smith claims he was attacked, and only struck Dickey in self-defense. Dickey is in a serious condition.
