At Raton, N. M., June 26, an attempt by a deputy sheriff to arrest a gambler named Gus Mentzell was followed by a melee, in which Henry Moulton, a Justice of the Peace, Hugh Edelston, one of the proprietors of the Moulton Hotel, and S. H. Jackson; a saloon-keeper, were killed. Immediately after the killing Mentzell was seized by the enraged citizens and hanged to a sign over the Third National Bank.
