Fort Miles, September 14 1943

Lieut. Colonel Alva E. Garey, Executive Officer at fort Miles, Lewes, was honored at

a parade of the Coast Artillery after serving 26 years in the military.

Colonel Garey entered the Army on 15 August, 1917, as a 2nd Lt., in the Quartermaster

Corp., and served seven months in France during WWI. After the war he became a captain in the

Reserve Officers corps. He was promoted to major in 1920 and in 1923 received the rank of

Lt. Colonel.

In 1924 he was assigned to the Ordnance in the Wisconsin National Guard, and in 1940 was

inducted in federal service as an ordnance officer to the 32nd Division at Camp Beauregard,

Louisiana. In 1942 he was reassigned to Wisconsin National Guard and that same year he

was reordered to active duty at Fort Miles as the executive officer.
