Description: Woman Was Not His Wife.

Date: May 22 1902

Newspaper published in: Houston, MO

(Aurora Argus)

A man by the name of Berd DUKE, who came here from Huggins, Texas county, a few weeks since with a woman whom he claimed was his wife and since which time has been the guest of relatives living in North Aurora, was arrested by Constable WRIGHT last Sunday on the charge of adultery and fined $50 and costs.

DUKE, who is about 50 or more years of age, insisted for some time that the woman, who is at least 30 years his junior, was his wife, and until it was fully demonstrated that his real wife had been deserted and left at Huggins for the woman with whom he came to Aurora.

His relative with whom he was visiting, and who is one of our most highly respected citizens, entered a strong remonstrance against DUKE'S actions, but apparently without avail.

The man and woman both departed Saturday night, ostensibly to return to Texas county, where DUKE has been engaged in business for some time.
