Alpena’s Disastrous Fire
AI.PENA. Mich., July 13. —The big fire which raged here Wednesday was brought under control early Thursday morning. The loss will reach $400,000. Mrs. Ann McLean, of Buffalo, was burned to death. Mrs. Putvin, aged 73, is so badly burned that she is not expected to live. Mrs. Nester and Mrs. Sharbonau were also seriously burned and may die. Fourteen blocks of buildings were burned, comprising 200 houses, and 1,500 people were rendered homeless. Although the people burned out were laborers, there was no actual suffering. George L. Maltz gave $1,000 and the use of the opera-house for sleeping purposes. The skating rink was also used for the same purpose and all the halls were filled.
