JOHN SMALLEY brought suit against the Illinois Central Railroad in the federal court at Jackson, Tenn., for $28,000 damages on account of injuries received in a collision on the road. The case was tried last week and decided in favor of the railroad, which then of its own free will and accord paid Smalley $1,000 and also assumed the payment of all the costs of the suit. Who will say that all railroads are soulless corporations?
