GEN. JAMES M. COMLY, editor of the Toledo (O.) Commercial, who died recently was United States Minister to the Hawaiian Kingdom during the Administration of President Hayes, and it appears might have become ruler of the islands had he so elected. A writer in the Cincinnati Commercial-Gazette says that while he was in Honolulu the King became financially embarrassed. There was danger of a rebellion, and the representatives of all foreign Governments and of the business interests for their own protection wanted to form a temporary Government, with Gen. Comly at its head. The King would have been deposed and Comly would have doubtless had a permanent position of power and affluence, but the sense of duly to his country and loyalty to his own fine and high principles would not permit him to accept the tempting offer that was so freely made him.
