The $26 million dollar U. S. Naval Facility opened in 1962 at Lewes. Delaware will
close March 31 as part of an effort to streamline naval operations. Lt. Com. Alan
Ables of the Philadelphia Naval Yard said the oceanographic research conducted in Lewes
will transfer to a recently established Naval Ocean Processing Facility at Dam Neck in
The Navy will return the land and buildings to the state of Delaware and the equipment
will be transferred to the Navy Defense Department.
The 13 officers and 91 enlisted men of the Navy will be transferred to other Navy bases
and the 16 civilians will be located at other jobs within the district.
