Yesterday morning Mr. Algy O’Rear, who recently purchased the stock of groceries from Mr. Frank O’Dwyer, who occupied the store-house formerly run by Mr. James Walker, in the flat near the Alabama Warehouse, caused a ripple of excitement by announcing that he had found $1800 in a snug little corner, hid away in the store, and that the owner, or owners, could get it by calling and furnishing the proper evidence of ownership. It will be remembered that Mr. James Walker, the young man who preceded Mr. O’Dwyer in business at the same place, and upon his death bed tried to make some statement in regard to his business, and this, coupled with the announcement of Mr. O’Rear, caused considerable speculation as to who the money rightly belonged. A number of parties advanced a good many theories as to how the money came there, and went as far back as ten years ago to the parties that had preceded Mr. Walker in business at the same place. After numberless inquiries had been made, and a great deal of speculation had been indulged in, Mr. O’Rear coolly informed the anxious throng that called upon him all day yesterday, that he had found $1800, but it happened not to be of the right kind, as it bore the unmistakable stamp of the Confederacy. There was some little disappointment at this announcement, and a good deal of fun. Alas, for human expectations and that decree of cruel fate.—Montgomery Star.
