Description: Arose From the Dead.

Date: January 20 1900

Newspaper published in: Carbondale, IL

A very peculiar incident occurred in East St. Louis which corroborates the theory that many people have been buried alive. Mrs. Christina HIRT, of that city, had been ill only a short time when she rapidly grew worse, and, as every one thought, died. The undertaker was called in to prepare the body for burial and was in the act of lifting the body upon a table to embalm it when the woman uttered a scream and sprang from his grasp. In relating her experience the lady said that she remembered distinctly the death scene, the grief of her friends, the last farewells, but she was utterly helpless to move or make a sound. Had she been interred she would doubtless have come to her senses underneath the sod only to endure the horrors of suffocation.
