S. R. Cothern, a Centralia merchant, was brutally murdered in his store in that city Monday night. He was found Tuesday morning in a dying condition and did not long survive his wounds. The murderer inflicted them with a hatchet, and it is supposed his purpose was robbery, as Cothern's clothes had been rifled. Mr. Cothern was a veteran of the civil war, and was badly crippled with paralysis. He was well to do and was supposed to carry considerable money. His family consists of a mother, wife and two adopted children. A young man of the city was suspected of the crime, but could not be found.
