Hon. Matthew S. Quay, senior United States Senator from Pennsylvania, died last Saturday at his home in Beaver, Pa., aged about seventy years. Senator Quay was the accepted leader of the Republican Party in his State. He was absolutely the party boss. His word was law. Mr. Quay spent several years in his early manhood as a school teacher in Madison County, Mississippi. Many of his political acts evinced his kindly feelings towards the people of the South, notably the patriotic position he took in the United States Senate in aiding to defeat the obnoxious Force Bill.
