Description: A New County?

Date: February 2 1905

Source: my granary

A Roswell dispatch says that Gayle Talbott and John Ritchie of Artesia have gone to Santa Fe as a committee to urge the Legislature to form a new county from parts of Eddy and Chaves counties, with Artesia as the county seat. The people are divided on the name of the new county, some wanting it called Artesia and others wanting it named Ritchie county in honor of John Ritchie, the pioneer citizen. Artesia is the town of artesian wells and is less than eighteen months old. The census just completed shows that the town has over 1,000 inhabitants.
