A Roswell dispatch of December 8th says:
With a knife clutched tightly in his right hand, the coroner's jury today viewed the corpse of James Hinton, who was shot and killed by his brother in law, Willis Large at Portalas.The verdit of the jury was that the deceased came tohis death from the effects of a pistol shot fired by Willis Large.
Hinton wetn home drunk and was beating his wife when young Large attempted to protect her. Hinton advanced upon him with a knife and the young man fired, the ball entering Hinton's left eye and passing out at the base of the brain. Death was instantaneous.
The dead man was a desperate character and killed five or six men. Two of his victims were Lawtrence Marion of Stonewall county,Texas and Henry Sapp of Fisher county,Texas. He had threatened the lives of the entire Large family, which was in mortal dread of him when he was drinking. Hinton is survived by a widow and five children. Willis Large is a younger man and is respected in the neighborhood.. He acted in the defense of the life of his sister and himself.
