Winfield, Kan., April 12.--Last Sunday Miss Alpha ELLIS, formerly of this place, died in Arkansas City under suspicious circumstances. An investigation revealed the fact that an abortion had been committed. Dr. E. B. EMERY and E. L. PECKHAM, a prominent young lawyer, both of this place, have been arrested charged with the crime. There is considerable excitement both here and at Sedan, where the young lady's parents live.

The jury in the case of TURNER, the deputy sheriff, who shot David MERYDITH, brought in a verdict of manslaughter in the fourth degree.
