Steve's Variety Store here is a striking example of what a man can accomplish who has the nerve to try. Five years ago Steve Geusebroek started here in a small way with only $12.04 capital. Today he has has one of the best paying businesses in Geddes. Natural genius, courtesy, courage and hard work, those are the qualities that account for Steve's success.
Mr Geusebroek was born in Amsterdam, Holland. At 14 he went to Germany and found employment as a riveter with a steel bridge gang. Then came his opportunity. Rudolph Hronish, Geddes, community farmer, sent him $75 to come to America. He came and worked for a season on the Hromish farm. That was 18 years ago. Then he went into the dray business in Geddes and next he became the agent at Geddes for the Standard Oil company, in which capacity he served eight years. And then he went into busines for himself.
you've heard of variety stores, but surely none exists that lives more truly pure to the name. Steve's Variety Store contains about everything in stock imaginable under a single roof. You can get anything at Steve's obtainable in other so called variety stores and then a lot of things that other variety stores don't keep. The stock include radios, ice boxes, wall paper, school supplies, candy, cigars, package groceries, chinaware, tinware and there is a fine lunch counter and soda fountain besides. The foundtain is a $1900 article, one of the very finest in Charles Mix county.
Each year he gives a picnic to Geddes community children at Ament's park. This summer he furnished 200 children 400 lunches, 400 oranges, 10 gallons of ice cream, 1200 pieces of candy etc, just to make the picnic a success. Besides himself, Steve employes four people in his store.
