Rev. R.E. SHERRILL preached his farewell sermon in the Presbyterian pulpit
last Sunday. It is understood that he will now retire from the active
ministry of the gospel on account of his age and bodily infirmities. An
immense congregation turned out to hear him.
On Monday evening the members of the Presbyterian Church and Sunday
School assembled at the residence of Mr. John E. MORRISON and proceeded in a
body to the residence of Mr. SHERRILL to bid their worthy pastor and his
estimable wife adieu. The occasion will long be remembered by the recipients
of this manifestation of regard as well as by the Sunday School. Mr. and
Mrs. SHERRILL left Tuesday morning for Florida and the best wishes of the
Leader, together with hosts of friends in Graham follow them.

A Suicide in Jail
Last Sunday morning when deputy sheriff M.A. WALLACE went up to the jail to
take breakfast to Jack LAYMON, the only prisoner confined there, he found
LAYMON hanging up on the south side of the cell stark dead. The prisoner had
secured a small piece of plank which he had securely fastened in the lattice
work of the steel cell. Then he tore a blanket into strings and placing his
water bucket upside down got upon it and then tied his feet together, and
with a strong noose tied his neck to the piece of plank above. He then
managed to tie his hands behind him securely and "kicked the bucket"
literally as well as figuratively. Justice STARRETT and County Attorney
Martin held an inquest Sunday and the verdict was suicide by strangulation.
Drs. JAMES and PRICE examined the body and testified before the coroner. The
prisoner left a package with a note to the sheriff directing him to forward
the package to its address, which was Miss Maggie PATRICK, Greenup, Illinois. The
package was opened by Justice Starrett and was found to contain only a
French harp and a letter to Maggie PATRICK, telling her that the writer
contemplated suicide, that he was a stranger in a strange land "accused of
owning one horse too many" and would be sent to the penitentiary unless he
accepted the alternative of death by his own hand. He closed by asking her
to be a good girl and to keep the harp to remember him by. The package and
its contents, together with a fifty cent coin left in the cell were
forwarded Monday by the County Attorney to Miss PATRICK, together with a
letter from that officer informing her of the ghastly consummation of his
suicidal design. The deceased was a total stranger in this country and was
arrested in possession of a stolen horse, by Sheriff COLLIER in October.
Waiving an examining trial, he was committed to jail to await the action of
the grand jury. Sheriff McAFEE, of Grayson County, was in town at the time
of his suicide with a bench warrant from the district court of Grayson for
the deceased for horse stealing in that county, where it is said he went by
another name.
The unfortunate man was not over twenty-one years of age and seems to
have been possessed of considerable intelligence and some education. There
is nothing beyond his suicide to suggest that he was not fully possessed of
his reason throughout and in that he manifested a great deal of cunning and
care. When last seen alive by Mr. WALLACE on Saturday evening he seemed to
be in his usual good spirits. He was buried Sunday evening at the expense of
the county.
