Montgomery - Execution of Shade Scarbrough, a Negro, for Murder
Montgomery, Ala. April 5 - Shade SCARBROUGH, who murdered Madison
CAESAR, both negroes, last July, was hanged at Clayton, Barbour county,
Ala. At 2:40 o'clock this afternoon. The execution took place in the
county jail in the presence of about fifty persons.
The condemned man spoke very briefly to the crowd from a jail window.
He said he was ready to die. Prayer was offered by a negro minister.
Prisoner shook hands with the Sheriff and others present and met his
death without flinching.
The father of Madison CEASAR, the murdered man was present and permitted
to witness the execution. The crowd was very orderly. SCARBROUGH was
dead in thirteen minutes after the drop and his body was cut down and
turned over to his friends and family.
