San Francisco, June 3, -- Howard SMITH, one of the male witnesses for the State in the case against Mrs. Jennie Mathews, for whose death O. W. Winthrop, Superintendent of Laurel Hill cemetery, is in jail, committed suicide to-day by cutting his throat with a razor. Smith was an employe [sic] in the cemetery and helped Winthrop carry Mrs. Mathews home, but said he believed she was shamming when she declared she was poisoned.
