James Richard Powell Sr., 73, of White Hall, died Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at his residence.
He was born July 22, 1935, in Walkerville Township, the son of Buck E. and Lily Mae Suttles Powell. He married Mary Alice Rogers April 28, 1954, in White Hall, and she survives.
Also surviving are five sons, James R. (Pansy) Powell Jr. of White Hall, Michael (Connie) Powell of Atlas, Ricky (Tammie) Powell of Woodson, Randy (Deena) Powell of Rochester and Danny (Margaret) Powell of White Hall; two daughters, Mary (Joe) Weinant and Kim (Ronzo) Brannan, both of White Hall. He has 18 grandchildren surviving, Missy Honeycutt of Roodhouse, Lindsey Powell and Nicole Kaiser, both of Murrayville, Jeremiah "Punky" Powell and Michael Powell, both of Pittsfield, Kala Powell of Atlas, Dustin Powell and Jordan Powell, both of Rochester, and Elisa Powell, Danny Joe Powell, Kevin Powell, Brittany Powell, Darci Brannan, Jason Brannan, Logan Weinant, Jacob Weinant, Ricky Winters and Cortney Winters, all of White Hall. Surviving great-grandchildren are Eain Winters, Skylar, Destyne and Dawson Powell, Blane Kaiser and Christopher and Charity Honeycutt. He has one sister, Shirley (Gene) Johns of Atlas. He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Sunkleep Powell; and two sisters, Katherine Plackett and Betty Blane.
Mr. Powell served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked for the White Hall Township Road Commissioner for more than 17 years. He was a bus driver for North Greene School District for seven years. He owned and operated Powell's Tree Service and operated Jim's Painting in White Hall for 48 years. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in White Hall.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church in White Hall, with burial at White Hall Cemetery. Visitation was from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall. Memorials may be made to the family. Condolences may be left online at www.airsman-hires.com.
