Clyde Tilford Johnson, age 39, of Gabbs died on Tuesday when shot by his 15 year old stepson, Maurice Oats, Jr. Johnson was reportedly beating his wife Tuesday night when young Oates grabbed a .22 caliber hunting rifle and ordered him to cease. Johnson turned on the youngster, threatening to him if he didn’t get out of the house.
The boy fled into the yard pursued by his stepfather who overtook him at the gate. Unable to get the gate open, young Oates wheeled and fired one shot at Johnson. The bullet pierced his heart.
Born in Big Springs, Texas, August 31, 1914, Mr. Johnson had followed mining most of his life. The family had been living in Gabbs for several months. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Bishop.
Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Mary J. Johnson, and his four children, Maurice, Robert, Alice and Kathleen, also three brothers, Raymond Johnson of Modesto; Clarence Johnson of Yuma, Arizona and Robert Johnson of San Francisco and two sisters, Mrs. Lillian Harris of Yuma and Mrs. Florabell Caselton of Tucson.
Hawthorne Lodge No. 1704 BPOE was in charge of the last rites and interment was in the Fallon cemetery.
