Mount Vernon Seminary – Interesting Commencement Exercises at Foundry Church Last Night

The commencement exercises of the Mount Vernon Seminary at the Foundry Church last night were of an interesting and varied character. The spacious edifice was densely crowded, for the young ladies who graduated are well known. Before the exercises, an organ solo by Miss Julia May SOMERS entertained the audience. The opening prayer of Dr. J. E. RANKIN was followed by the overture to “William Tell,” played by Misses EDDY, PATTISON, NASH, and BAGGS; “The Land of the Heathen,” an essay by Miss Ida M. ANDREWS was well received. The selection “O Luce di Quest’ anima,” sung by Miss Katie R. PERRY, gave a fine opportunity to that young lady to display her splendid voice. Miss Mary J. RANKIN, in the recitation, “The Maiden Martyr,” displayed her elocutional powers. A vocal solo, ‘The Flower Girl,” by Miss Florence K. NOKES, was followed by an essay, “There is in souls a sympathy with sounds,” by Miss Lura NASH. The “Polonaise Militaire,” for four hands, was executed by Misses EDDY and SOMERS. “Our Vernacular” was treated of in an essay by Miss Florence NOKES, after which Von Weber’s “Polacca Brillante” was played by Misses NASH and SOMERS. A solo, “The Message,” by Miss Julia ROCKWELL, and a duet, ‘Excelsior,” by Misses STEWART and BAGGS, were admired. The valedictory was an excellent composition and was delivered by Miss Mary F. RANKIN. Rev. H. R. NAYLOR, D.D., conferred the diplomas upon the following graduates:

– Miss Ida Monson Andrus
– Miss Lura Nash
– Miss Florence Kathleen Nokes
– Miss Mary Farnham Rankin

A good-night chorus, by the vocal class, closed the exercises.
