SPANISH VETS TO ELECT.
Lively Contest Expected Over Choice of Department Commander.
In general orders issued to the ten camps of the United Spanish War veterans comprising the Department of the District of Columbia, Capt. J. Walter MITCHELL, department commander, has announced that at the next meeting of that body nominations will be made for department officers to serve one year.
He has also ordered that the annual encampment for the election of officers will be held August 8, and that the camps at Richmond and Fredericksburg, Va., and Wilmington, Del., will be fully represented by delegates and past camp officers.
The outlook is said to be that there will be a lively contest over the election of a department commander to succeed Capt. MITCHELL, who has declined to run again. Already there are four candidates in the field, and it is said there may be others. Those mentioned at this time are Capt. Richmond Pearson HOBSON, commander of the Admiral George Dewey Naval Camp; Commander Edward L. COGAN, of Richard J. harden Camp; Maj. Joseph Milton HELLER, of Henry W. Lawton Camp, and Post Department Adjutant G. E. RAUSCH, of Gen. Nelson A. Miles Camp.
At a recent meeting of the District department the matter of celebrating Santiago Day, July 17, by giving a representation of the charge up San Juan Hill and the capture of the Spanish block houses was left in the hands of Department Commander MITCHELL. He has decided to hold the celebration, and will announce the personnel of the committee in charge in a few days.
