JOSEPH AND ETHEL PATCHED UP TRUCE
---------------------
EVANSTON, Ill., Feb. 24 (AP) If anyone has been holding his breath over the unusual love affair of Joseph Carson and Miss Ethel Borlund, he may breathe again. The troubles been patched up.
Carson has been waiting 10 years for Miss Borlund to marry him. In the interim, as became known Saturday, he has been calling thrice weekly, officially, and four times weekly, unofficially. The latter visits have been for the purpose of shooing away rivals. A procedure which not infrequently has prompted Miss Borlund to call police. She felt that Carsons patrolling of the front side walk on his off-evening was out of reason.
He called Sunday and that is one of Carsons nights. He had been arrested Friday night at Miss Borlunds request, he having resumed his patrol in front of her place. But last night, being a regular night, he was admitted and they talked it over. He agreed to stay away Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday night and in return for his forbearance, Miss Borlund said she would still regard their engagement as effective.

DETECTIVE RYAN FIRST CASUALTY IN DRIVE
CHICAGO, Feb. 24 (AP) Detective John J. Ryan became the first police casualty today in Chicagos drive on crime. Ryan was killed in a gun battle with a robber suspect he sought to arrest.
The suspect, Joseph Fallon, fled after being assisted into an automobile by two women. He was believed wounded.
Ryan was stationed in the apartment house where Fallon lived to await his return. Police earlier had surrounded the place on a tip that Fallon was at home.
It developed that Fallon was hiding in a skylight. After the other policemen departed he shot at Ryan from above and then leaped to the ground. Ryan attempted to seize him and was shot again, fatally.
