Chinaman Hero; Is Badly Injured By Blazing Tree
Admiral DEWEY’s Chinese cook, AH MAW, already one of the heroes of the battle of Manila Bay, covered himself with more laurels New Year Eve, when he wrestled with a flaming Christmas tree is [sp.] a residence near the Postoffice, and saved the house and occupants.
As a result of his valor AH MAW is a patient at the Emergency Hospital and may lose his sight. His face, hands, and arms were severely burned, and it is believed he will have to remain at the hospital for several weeks. His hair was singed off and his eyes were so badly burned that physicians have doubt if he will be able to use them again, except with colored glasses.
The candles on the tree were lighted by one of AH MAW’s friends, and a short time afterward the blaze set fire to a lace curtain. A few seconds later the tree was flaming, and the occupants of the house fled to the street.
AH MAW seized the burning tree in his arms and carried it to the front door, and threw it to the street. It was not until after the flames had been beaten out with a stick that AH MAW realized he had been severely burned.
