Undertaker Escapes Death When Elevator Falls
---------------------
Special to The Daily Times
Dalton, Ga., March 3 – Dropping from the third to the ground floor when the freight elevator of the Leonard-McGhee furniture company broke, W. G. McGhee, manager of the company; Will Trevitt, an undertaker, and Kelley Bogle, a salesman, escaped serious injury as if by a miracle.
The three men were loading a heavy coffin from the third floor of the building onto the elevator and had themselves walked onto it when some bolts holding a heavy rod connecting two cog wheels snapped. The brake refused to work and the elevator started downward gaining speed rapidly.
It was a sheer drop of three stories and when the elevator reached the first floor it rebounded several feet. The heavy coffin bounced and pinned Mr. Bogle’s feet down. A flying fragment struck Mr. McGhee above the left eye, cutting a long gash, and the knee was given a severe twist. Mr. Trevitt was shaken up and bruised.
