Description: Down a shaft to death

Date: January 22 1902

Newspaper published in: Tucson

Source: library

Siprians Buterro (sic) lost his life at Morenci. Buterros (sic) had charge of the top of the shaft. He received an order from one of the other miners for some powder and fuse which was stored in the Blue mine. Tom Davis, the shift boss, was down in the mine when the order was received and Buterros went down in the cage to the first station where he found the foreman and got from him the powder. Buterros returned to the cage with the powder and put it in the cage when he discovered he had forgotten the fuse. He returned to Mr. Davis and received the fuse and that was the last time he was seen alive.

When Buterros returned for the forgotten fuse he evidently forgot to lower the bar at the station. Between the time he put the powder in the cage and returned with the fuse a miner on top had signaled the cage up and when Buterros returned with the fuse he walked into the shaft, falling seventy feet and was instantly killed.
