Newspaper published in: Tucson
Mrs. Edna Cotton, wife of Colonel W.J. Cotton, was accidentally shot and killed at Oakland, California March 2, under extraordinary distressing circumstances. The San Francisco Chronicle gives the following account of the tragedy: “Mrs. Edna Cotton, wife of Colonel W.J. Cotton, accidentally shot herself through the heart with a revolver at the Hotel Metropole while preparing to attend a dinner to be given by her husband at the Athenian club. Death was almost instantaneous. The shooting took place a few minutes before 5 o’clock. Colonel Cotton was then at the Athenian club making the final arrangements for the affair to be given.” Colonel Cotton and wife came to Phoenix along in the latter ‘80s and remained there until about four years ago, when they moved to San Diego. About a year ago Colonel Cotton moved to San Francisco and became the proprietor of the Mobile agency there and at San Jose. The family resided in the latter city. Mrs. Cotton left, beside her husband, two sons.
