Description: M.A. Cooley sustained a severe scalp wound Monday by being struck...

Date: November 25 1913

Newspaper published in: Brookfield

M.A. COOLEY sustained a severe scalp wound Monday by being struck with the
wheel of a surrey. He had been driving the team but stopped in front of
JENKINS' plumbing establishmentto set a suitcase inside the shop door. As
he came out the horses, which had been left untied, had begun to walk away
and immediately broke into a trot. Mr. COOLEY ran after them and attempted
to get into the vehicle but fell and the upper left side of his head was
deeply abraised over a space of about one inch by four. The torn scalp bled
profusely and it was at first thought that he might be dangerously injured.
He was taken to a doctor's office at once and it was soon found that the
cuts were only scalp deep. The horses ran south nearly to the railroad
track, then turned in Main street and doubled back to the Brownlee bank
corner which they rounded into East Brook street and came to a sudden stop
by straddling a tree on the new post office building birm. When they struck
the big elm they were going so slowly that no injury was done to the horses
or surrey and only one strap was broken on the harness.

OBITUARY.
William ROUSE, aged father of Geo. W. ROUSE of this city, passed away at his
home 7 miles north of Green City, Mo., about noon on Wednesday, November 19,
1913, after a brief illness from pneumonia, at the age of 79 years, 10
months and 14 days.

The Green City Press says of him: "Mr. ROUSE was one of Sullivan county's
early settlers, the majority of whom have gone on before. He had lived in
the Pennville neighborhood for over half a century, and was a man of high
standing in that community, enjoying the confidence and esteem of a wide
circle of friends. He lived to a good old age, and until his recent illness
looked after the affairs about the farm and assisted his son Frank, with
whom he lived, in attending to the daily tasks."

"Besides two brothers, Samuel ROUSE of near Lemonville and Harrison ROUSE of
Pennville, and one sister, Mrs. George LAWHORN of north of Green City, he is
survived by his aged wife and 7 children, five sons and two daughters:
Frank of Pennville; Elisha and Will of Denver, Col., Samuel of Monmouth,
Ill.; George of Brookfield, Mo.; Mrs. Andrew THOMPSON of Green City; and
Mrs. Mary SCOBEE of Lincoln, Neb. All the children, with the exception of
Mrs. SCOBEE, were at the bedside when the final summons came."

The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. H.J. DUCKER of the Methodist
Episcopal church, of which the deceased was a member, at Pennville on
Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock, and interment was made in the cemetery
there. A large attendance of neighbors and friends gathered to express the
high esteem in which the deceased was held, and the floral offerings were
beautiful tributes of love and sorrow, for all of which our fellow townsman,
Geo. W. ROUSE, desires to espress in behalf of himself and the other members
of the mourning family, the most sincere appreciation, which they will carry
in loving remembrance along with tender recollections of the departed.

William ROUSE was born in Ralls county, Mo., January 5, 1834. He came to
Sullivan county in 1850, settling near the home where he died. In 1852 he
was married to Miss Sarah E. DAMERALL of Putnam county, and his residence at
Pennville covers a span of 63 years. Besides the children mentioned above,
five are dead.

It was late in life that Mr. ROUSE made his spiritual preparation for the
better world to which he has now gone, having become a member of the
Methodist Episcopal church in 1907, but throughtout his long citizenship
here he has been known as exemplary in both private and public life.

The venerable man had visited in Brookfield only a few months ago, at which
time he was enjoying good health with a prospect of living many years, and
the acquaintances which he made here unite in sympathy to the Brookfield son
and his family, all of whom were in attendance at the funeral.
