-Lewis NAVE, of Oklahoma, 13 years old, has been sent to the penitentiary
for killing his father. He shot his father after he had been whipped for
some offense.
-General Leonard WOOD recommended the substitution of motor cars for the
army mule. The general claims that the motor car will do the same work as
mule-drawn wagons and do it more rapidly.
-J.C. MARS, the aviator, with his biplane, fell 2000 feet into the water at
Sheepshead bay Saturday. The machine was a total wreck, but the aviator was
picked up by the wrecking tug Hustler.
-Lee V. WILLIAMS, of Conway, Arkansas, who lost both feet in a railway
accident while stealing a ride on the St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern
railway, has been given a verdict of $25,000 damages against the railroad.

STATE NEWS IN BRIEF.
-Former Governor FRANCIS made a tour throught the eastern part of Saline
county Saturday in an automobile.
-Mrs. J.H. ZOLLINGER, wife of Judge ZOLLINGER, president of the Commercial
bank, of Boonville, died Saturday.
-Mrs. Mary E. SMITH, 30 years old, wife of Envoy SMITH of the Salvation
Army, died on the street at Monett Saturday.
-A $30,000 pipe organ, the gift of R.A. LONG, the millionaire lumberman, has
been installed in the Independence Boulevard church at Kansas City.
-Vice President SHERMAN held a conference with Missouri Republicans
congressional candidates and St. Louis federal officers at the GRANT farm
Sunday.
-Mrs. STOEKLIN, mother of Christian STOEKLIN, residing near Montgomery City,
was killed Saturday by being thrown from a spring wagon, one of the weels of
which struck a log.
-Nathan FRANK, formerly a member of congress from one of the St. Louis
districts, is mentioned as a probable candidate for the Republican
nomination for the United States senate.
-Bessie HOLT, a fifteen year old girl, who left her aunt's home in Fostoria,
Kansas, a week ago to go to her home between Galt and Trenton, Grundy
county, has not been heard of since.
-W.M. WILSON recently exhibited at Rich Hill peaches grown on a wild cherry
tree. The peach sprouts were grafted on the cherry tree and the results
give the flavor of both the peach and cherry.
-Dr. H.L. BARNUM, of Sedalia, who was stricken with paralysis and deprived
of the power of speech or of using writing material, succeeded in making
known his wants by tapping with a pencil, he being acquainted with the
Morse telegraph code.
-Governor HADLEY has paroled Ed WILLIAMS, a young convict who was convicted
of larceny in Henry county and sentenced to the penitentiary for two years.
WILLIAMS had served ten months of his sentence, and the sheriff of Henry
county will be responsible for him and will keep him employed. William is
21 years of age.
-Sterling P. BOND, of St. Louis, democratic candidate for United States
senator, in a speech at Versailles says he has visited fifty-five counties
and has made more speeches than any other candidate for that position.
-For the first time since reconstruction days Monroe county has a Republican
official in the person of County Judge J.S. WALTERS, appointed by Governor
HADLEY, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Judge James T. UMSTADDT.
-Miss Lula COLLINS, a Pike county school teacher, is not a believer in
corporal punishment as a rule, but she does believe that there should be
exceptions to all rules, as was shown by the fact that she soundly slapped
the face of a young masher, who in plying his avocation on the Bowling Green
fair grounds, incautiously attempted a stunt of mashing with Miss Lula as
the object.

LOCAL.
-F.M. BEERS a former well known resident and prominent farmer of East Linn
county, died at his home at Glendale, California, Wednesday August 17.
-Rev. W.C. ATWOOD returned Monday from a month's vacation in Nebraska and
Montana.
-A pleasant surprise and handkerchief shower was given for Mrs. Emory DEAN,
of the south side, Wednesday evening. The occasion was Mrs. DEAN's birth.
A further partial surprise to the DEAN family was the marriage of their son,
Frank, to Miss Edith McDANIEL the same evening at the U.B. parsonage, Rev.
C.E. SNOW officiating.
-Mr. and Mrs. Geo. B. MILLER returned Wednesday night from a two weeks'
visit to their old home near Peru, Indiana, where they took in the annual
reunion of the MILLER family.
-G.W. AKIN made a business trip to Sumner Tuesday.
-Mrs. Jean BURCH is visitig relatives in Horton, Kansas.
-J.J.HENDRICKS made a business trip to Linneus Thursday.
-T.H. BARBEE, of Purdin, was in Brookfield Wednesday.
-W.E. MADDEN made a business trip to Hannibal, Wednesday.
-Fabian PRATT, of Linneus, was a Brookfield vistor Monday.
-Tillie McGRAIL visited friends in Chicago a few days this week and was the
guest of friends in St. Louis.
-Gus GANNON spent Sunday with his family at Excelsior Springs.
-Miss Essie KENDRICK will leave today to vist friends at Carrollton.
-T.L. McDANNALD, of Shelby, was a Brookfield visitor Wednesday.
-John GABEL, of Browning, was in Brookfield a few days this week.
-Mrs. Lee FORREST went to Breckenridge Wednesday to visit friends.
-W.G. BECKETT, of Purdin, was in Brookfield Wednesday on business.
-Del MARTZ, of Kirksville, is in Brookfield, the guest of Miss Ethel
CLEAVER.
-D.B. SKENE made a business trip to Carrollton and Huntsville this week.

-Mrs. Wm. ROBERTS returned Monday from a visit with relatives at Unionville.
-Mrs. Will CURTIS has gone to Grand Junction, Colorado, on a three weeks'

-Mrs. Lucie FURLTON was the guest of friends at Chillicothe a few days this
week.
-Lon KELLEY, of Linneus, was the guest of Miss Birdie BROWN Tuesday evening.
--Miss Essie CLARK went to Bucklin Thursday to visit relatives and attend
the fair.
-W.J. WHITE and wife were the guests of relatives near Bucklin the first of
the week.
-H.S. JOHNSON and Clarence SWINEY, of Linneus, were Brookfield visitors
Wednesday.
-M. BUSWELL, of Grantsville township was in Brookfield Friday of last week
on business.
-Mrs. Walter PROCTOR, of Long Branch, California, is visiting her brother,
Al LUCAS, and wife.
-Misses Mae NOLL and Kathryn CARLON returned Wednesday from a month's visit
in Colorado.
-Mrs. Rubey FOSTER went to New Cambria Tuesday to visit her sister, Mrs. Ed
HOFFMAN.
-Mrs. Geo. PARSLEY and G.W. LANGDON & wife went to Browning to visit
relatives.
-J.G. THUDIUM, Jr. and Giles McCOLLUM went to Excelsior Springs last
Saturday for a short stay.
-Mrs. Cleo BURCH visited with Miss Maude PRATHER at Meadville last week and
took in the Chautauqua.
-Mrs. COOK and daughter, Miss Nira, of Laclede, were the guests of Mrs. Lee
FORREST.
-Mrs. Hiram DEWEY arrived today from a three months' visit with relatives in
Michigan and Wisconsin.
-George W. LANGDON & wife, of Lamar, Colorado, are visiting their niece,
mrs. George PARSLEY & family.
-Miss Mary ANDERSON, of Aurora, Illinois, arrived Friday for a two weeks'
visit with her aunt, Mrs. L.H. MALONE.
-Miss Mae LAMBERT returned this week from a two months visit with relatives
in Kansas and Colorado.
-Mr. and Mrs. Crews D. HAYES and little daughter, Marion, of Chicago, are
the guests of D.T. HAYES and wife.
-Mrs. Herman REIDEL returned to her home in Hannibal Sunday, after a week's
visit with her aunts, Misses Barbara and Mary OTT.
-Oliver CRAMER is putting in time this week in the eastern markets buying
the daintiest, the nicest and the best in his line for the fall trade.
-Miss Rose KRAUSE, of Dayton, Ohio, arrived Monday and will have charge of
the trimming department in Miss BELL's millinery store this season.
-Joseph BUSWELL & wife, of Grantsvile township, were in Brookfield, enroute
to Chatanooga, Oklahoma, for a two weeks' visit with friends.
-Minis FALL returned to his home at Ames, Iowa, last week, after a short
visit with his father-in-law G.W. AKIN & family. While here, Mr. FALL bought
a 160 acre farm near Forker.
-Mr. and Mrs. Cleo BURCH went to Kansas City to spend a few days with the
latter's brother, Ray FRITZ, returning Saturday to Chillicothe, where they
will visit with Mr. and Mrs. John BURCH & family.
-F.M. and J.S. ROWELL returned Friday of last week from a visit to Salt Lake
City, Colorado Springs and Denver. The Pikes Peak Daily News of August 24
mentions their names among those that has ascended to the top of the
mountain that day.

COUNTY NEWS.
The Brenkenridge Bulletin contains an interesting account of the marriage of
Professor E.L. HARRINGTON, son of that sterling citizen of East Linn county
Judge HARRINGTON, to Miss Jessie Olive ROBBINS, of Breckenridge.
The Laclede Blade--"In honor of the eightieth birthday of Joseph MATHIASCH,
one of our oldest and most highly esteemed citizens, his children,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren met at his home in Laclede last Sunday
and enjoyed a fine birthday dinner. Those present were mr. and Mrs. John
PETERS & family, of Chillicothe; Mr. and Mrs. S.E. HUNTER & children, of
Brookfield; and Mr. and Mrs. Chas. MATHIASCH & sons, of Laclede. In spite
of advanced age, Mr. MATHIASCH is in fairly good health and his many friends
expect him to be able to enjoy many more occasions of this kind."
The Marceline Journal --Clarence M. KENDRICK, of that city, in connection
with some Carroll county friends may have succeeded in locating a gold mine
in Colorado. He returned home Sunday morning from a ten days' stay in
Denver, Colorado and in the mining camps of Silver Plume and Georgetown.
St. Catharine.
-Clarence BEVIER is putting up a new silo this week.
-Geo. STEVENSON and wife visited at Rufus BAKER's Sunday.
-Mike WALSH and family were guests at T. HARWOOD's Sunday.
-We are glad to report that Miss Jessie FARRIS is able to go for a short
drive.
-Miss Marie MUSSON, of Bucklin, is visiting Miss Edyth McBRIDE.
-Mrs. Melvin LEWIS visited her brother, Joe GARDNER, and family this week.
-James SULLIVAN brought Rufus BAKER's farm. Mr. BAKER will locate in
Kansas.
-Chas. GULLICK has returned from a ten days' visit to relatives in Hannibal
and Kewanee, Illinois.
-John LINEBERRY is carrying mail for Wess HARPER while Mr. HARPER takes his
fifteen days vacation.
-Mrs. NORTHUP is still on the sick list, and so is little Margaret BLACK. At
this writing both are slightly improved.
-Mrs. Chas. CLARK and baby visited the former's sister, Mrs. Bert
BUTTERFIELD, of Brookfield, the first of the week.
-Charley FINNEY had the misfortune to get his hand caught in a pulley while
helping his father dig a well, tearing the end off just behind the nail.
-Pete WALSH's first political speech at this place Saturday was good.
-Chas GROETECKE and wife leave next Tuesday for a visit at Parsons, Kansas,
Oklahoma City and Texas. We trust they will not locate in any of those
places.
-T. McCLINTOCK's land deal in Kansas was closed this week and they expect to
move some time soon. Mr. and Mrs. McCLINTOCK were born and reared in this
community and we regret to see them go to a new home.
-As carriers THUDIUM and HARPER started on their routes Wednesday morning,
Mr. THUDIUM's team became frightened and ran into Mr. HARPER's buggy,
breaking two wheels and throwing Mr. HARPER out. He was only slightly
injured, however. Mr. THUDIUM's team then broke the tongue out of his buggy
and got loose from him. A short time after the accident with the aid of
borrowed buggies they were able to resume their duties.

CARPENTER.
-Walter PENDLETON and family and Mrs. George WYANT visited relatives near
Hybrid Saturday and Sunday.
-Mrs. Ilia HANCOCK, of Twin Falls, Idaho, arrived last Friday for a visit
with her parents, A.J. HANEY and wife.
-Miss Eva BIGGER, of Bucklin, and her friend, Miss Ethel McMILLAN, of
Chicago, spent Frieday at C.A. BIGGER's.
-I.E. SIGHTS had a very bad fall at the home of his daughters, Mrs. Mollie
BALLARD, Thursday. He was building a swing for the children and fell,
striking his side against a timber and breaking several ribs.
-Little Louis, infant son of William CALLAHAN, of Cash district, died
Tuesday morning. His little twin sister is quite ill. The babies were
about 8 months old. The parents have the sympathy of the entire community.

MEADVILLE.
-Captain CAVE was from Linneus Tuesday.
-Dr. BURKE, of Laclede, was in the city Tuesday.
-Walter EVANS and daughter went to Kansas City, Tuesday.
-H.M. HANNUM, of Brookfield, was here on business Tuesday.
-John SWINNEY, of Linneus, was here in his automobile Tuesday.
-A.F. SCHENCK, of Ottumwa, Iowa, visited friends here Tuesday.
-Loyd BOTTS, of Oklahoma, is making a brief visit to relatives and friends
here.
-Mr. ROBINSON, the music man, and his wife, of Chillicothe, were in
meadville Tuesday.
-County Clerk H.S. JOHNSON, of Linneus, interviewed Meadville merchants
about their licenses this week.
-Dr. JOHNSON is in the hospital at Chillicothe, undergoing a surgical
operation for appendicitis. He is reported to be getting along nicely.
-Mr. HOPSON, who is a successful handler of automobiles, is out every day
with Dr. JOHNSON's car and runs at close to the top speed.
-Dr. R.J. WATERS, who has been very successful in treating all kinds of
throat and lung troubles, was here Tuesday.
-John HILDERBRAND, a Linn County pioneer, who came to Laclede in 1867,
returned to his home in Kansas City Wednesday after a visit in this
vicinity.

-Olive TOLEN spent Sunday with Neita JOHNSON.
-Robert STANLEY spent Saturday night at J.G. WISDOM's.
-Ruth MAYHUGH called on Miss Julia WARNER Sunday afternoon.
-Mr. and Mrs. G.M. TOLEN & children spent Sunday at Wm KEPTNER's.
-Martin BURKE and family called at the J.G. WISOM home Sunday afternoon.
-John BURKE took a load to the Salisbury chautauqua Monday in his
automobile.
-Mr. and Mrs. Albert GATES are the proud parents of a baby girl, weighing
ten pounds.
-Mrs. Pat CAREY and Miss Julia WARNER called at martin BURKE's Friday
afternoon.
-Mrs. O.A. MAYHUGH and daughter, Miss Florence, called at J.G. WISDOM's
Sunday afternoon.
-Mr. and mrs. Enoch MALES, of Earlham, Iowa, are visiting Mrs. MALE's
sister, Mrs. I.V. FAIRHOLM.
-Isaac WOOLERY, of Aurora, Nebraska, visited his sister, Mrs. I.V. FAIRHOLM,
the latter part of last week.
-Misses Beulah and Blanche TOLEN and Mabel and Minnie Lake VENABLE visited
at Albert DUNCAN's Saturday night and Sunday.
-Mr. and Mrs. I.V. FAIRHOLM, Mr. and Mrs. MALES, of Iowa, and Isaac WOOLERY,
of Nebraska spent Sunday at G.B. WOOLERY's in Brookfield.
-Henry WISDOM, wife and daughter returned to their home in Cantonment,
Oklahoma, Monday. They were accompanied home by Miss Phebe WISDOM, who will
make an extended visit.

RECORD OF PAST WEEK.
Former Lieutenant Governor John C. McKINLEY, of Unionville, stopped off at
Brookfield between trains Monday on his way to St. Louis.
D.B."Dave" SKENE, who during his entire residence in Brookfield has been
a
greatly valued member of the Baptist church as well as of the choir and
Missionary society of that church, was given a farewell surprise Monday
night. A crowd of good friends gathered 'round and expressed their regret
at his coming departure and their best wishes for his unbounded success in
the new field to which he goes. Lee FLETCHER in a neat speech presented
him, on behalf of those present, with a beautiful traveling set.
Saturday, September 10, is the time and the Park livery barn the place, for

HOWARD-ARNOLD. With the rush of work last week, with a short mechanical
force, and with the office force taking in the chautauqua whether the
opportunity offered or not, we knew the Gazette was going to miss part of
the news and we did, a part of which was the quiet home wedding of those two
worthy young people, Miss Bertha Lee ARNOLD, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank
ARNOLD of this city, and Mr. Robert A. HOWARD, formerly of Cameron, now of
Brookfield, Rev. A. L. ZINK, pastor of the Christian church, officiating.
The fair bride, who has lived in this city all her life, has scores of
friends, young and old, and the groom, during his year's work here, has by
his industry and intergity made hosts of friends who join with the Gazette
in hearty congratulations.
