Col. J. A. Binford is regarded the most popular man in Montgomery county, and a leading Alliance man. He thus expresses himself to the Carrollton Conservative:
“I regard the Sub-Treasury plan as a failure. It is contrary to the genius and spirit of American institutions. It is contrary to the Constitution of the United States—so say George and Walthall—and, I regard them both as able lawyers and patriotic citizens, and they certainly ought to know what is constitutional. They could have no personal interest in fighting the measure. The Sub-Treasury bill would be disastrous to the farmer. It means class legislation. It means paternal government, which is just what the Alliance denounces.”
