Farmer Near New Hope
Finds $500 Under Floor
If Was Placed There During the
Civil War to Avoid Soldiers Raids
News has reached the city of the great luck of a farmer named Johnson who resides in Marshall County just across the Madison County line. Johnson removed an old doorsill in his home a few days ago and found two or three coins underneath and this led him to make a further search. He found other coins and kept digging them up until he had accumulated more than five hundred dollars that had been placed under his floor. The newest coin found was dated 1858 and it is believed the money was hidden by a former resident of the house who feared that the raiding Union soldiers would take it.
