Local Matters

Sentenced to Auburn

Early on the morning of December 29th, SERGEANT BOYLE, of the First Precinct arrested two safe-blowers named THOMAS alias "CODGER" WHALEN, and WILLIAM E. CONNIFF, who had in their possession a lot of burglars' tools and were evidently bent on a job. They were indicted and CONNIFF was convicted in the Superior Court on the 4th inst., after some hard work by the prosecuting officers. This morning the prisoner was sentenced by JUDGE SHELDON to hard labor in Auburn prison for five years. The offense of which CONNIFF was convicted is only a misdemeanor and not punishable by imprisonment, but the fact that he had already served two terms in the Western House of Refuge empowered the Court to impose the severe penalty. CONNIFF gave his age as 36 years, and his birthplace Lockport. His hair is prematurely gray, WHELAN is still in jail.

In the same Court this morning, THOMAS WALSH, aged 23 years, was also committed to Auburn prison for five years. He was recently convicted of grand larceny in stealing some overcoats at a wedding party about the middle of January. The reason that the Judge was not more lenient with him was because he was convicted about two years ago of an attempt at burglary and fined $25.
