Spokane Washington:Lawyers in Spokane say that Shoshone county,Ideaho and not Routt county,Colorado as reported in dispatches from Denver, is entitled to the distinction of having the first jury composed of women in the US.The case in which the wives of two miners in the Coeur d'Alene district were principals was tried before Judge Kelly at Wardner, more than five years ago. The quarrel originated when one of the women alleged that the other's fence was on her ground and arrest followed. Kelly, like a Danial come to judgement instructed his constable to impanel a jury of twelve women. L WQhitsell formerly an attorney at Wardner and James Parsons were counsel in the case which created a lot of merriment because of the utter lack of knowledge by the women as to legal terms and the duties of persons sitting in jury. However they returned a verdict which is a matter of record in the annals of Shoshone county.
