Solomon Islands, 1944:
By directon of the President of the United States of America, the Legion of Merit was awarded to Sgt. James B. Dowdy of Salisbury on January 17, for exceptional meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services whie leading a patrol which destroyed vital enemy installations on Gonongga, off the coast of Valla LeValla in the Solomons. With four enlisted men and six natives, Sgt. Dowdy landed on the small island and led a skillful reconnaissance and advance, driving off the Japanese who were taken by surprise. Sgt. Dowdys patrol discovered and destroyed a large supply depot which was the principal enemny installation on the island. The dangerous search mission was undertaken during the action at Valla LaValla and was an imprortant contribution to the success of the operation that occured between September 11th and 13th.
