Jacksonville, Ill., Aug. 4.--John CHERRY, Jr., an illiterate millionaire, whose young and educated wife fled from her home here Saturday, the disappearance being simultaneous with that of Peter HAXTON, the CHERRY chauffuer, believes his wife has fled to New York.
Mrs. CHERRY was last seen here Saturday, when she drove around town in her new motor car with HAXTON. She drew a considerable sum of money from a local bank and then both vanished. CHERRY is descended from a family of Portuguese refugees. His father began life as laborer in Jacksonville.
While digging in a trench for the foundation of a building, he found a pot of gold coins that had been buried. With this money he bought a team and started as a contractor and became rich.
Young "John," as he is still called, met a handsome brunette, Miss Lina BASKETT, daughter of William R. BASKETT, ex-state building and loan commissioner of Missouri. Miss BASKETT was then 20 years old and one of the belles of her state. They were married two years ago. Thought rated as a millionaire, CHERRY's birth and ignorance barred his wife from society. She had been accustomed to social life in Missouri and felt the exclusion from society in Jacksonville.
