Funeral Services Held This Afternoon For Prominent Resident

Funeral services were held in Mina this afternoon (Wednesday) at 2:30 at the Grace Community chapel for John R. TOWNER, long time resident of Mineral county who died at his home in Sodaville early Sunday morning. Conducting the services were J.J. NOONE, of the NOONE mortuary service, Hawthorne, and hymns were sung by Mr. June EARL accompanied by Mrs. Belle GATES.
Pallbearers, all old time friends of Mr. TOWNER, were A. R. NELSON of Hawthorne, Charles MARAKAS, Nick MARAKAS, S. C. STRATTAN, Henry EDDY, Joe POPE and Jafet LINDEBERG of Mina.
Mr. TOWNER who would have been 80 years old in March, had been in failing health for several months.
A native of Ohio, Mr. TOWNER was reared and educated in that state and spent his early life as a school teacher in Kansas, Oregon and Nevada. He taught for a time in Mina but gave up t4eaching to devote his time to mining interests that he had acquired in Southern Mineral county. At times he was quite successful in mining ventures but always he was willing to put back into the ground that which he had taken out as he had the greatest faith that new and larger mines remained to be developed in Mineral coounty.
Along with his mining interests, Mr. TOWNER, in partnership with his wife, also acquired the hot springs and plunge at Sodaville which they continued to operate through lean as well as prosperous years, and it was at Sodaville that they made their home.
Always active in political and civic affairs, Mr. TOWNER served as a member of the Mineral county board of education, the Mineral county board of hospital trustees, and for years was a member of the Democratic central committe. He frequently delivered the keynote speech at the Democratic convention in this county.
Surviving Mr. TOWNER is his widow, Mrs. Lucelia TOWNER, who also makes her home in Sodaville.
